Our History

The Mack & Payne Funeral Home was established in March 1912. It was first located at 185 West Washington Street. It was launched by two African American businessmen, Mr. James McCluskey and Mr. Andrew Payne. Due to failing health, Mr. Payne sold his interest in the funeral home to Mr. McCluskey. At that time, Mr. Lauren McWhorter and Professor Lyons were working with Mr. McCluskey.

In 1944, Mr. Houston Lumpkin, Sr. purchased the funeral home from Mr. McCluskey. He operated the business until his death in 1961. At this time, Mr. Houston Lumpkin, Jr., Ms. Dorothy Lumpkin Weir, and Ms. Minnie Lumpkin Willis operated the business. Mr. Houston Lumpkin, Jr. died in 1972.

Furthermore, in March 1978, Mr. Alfonso Willis acquired Mack & Payne Funeral Home. Thereafter, in April 1981, an official groundbreaking was held at its present location, 625 Nellie B. Avenue in Athens, GA. On October 18th, 1981, dedication services were held commemorating the official change of location.

Thereafter, on June 2, 1991, the chapel of the Mack & Payne Funeral Home was officially dedicated as “Willis Chapel” in honor of Mr. Willis’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ozzie and Mattie Sue Willis. Consequently, his grandson, Shane Backwell serves as the 3rd generation owner of the historic Mack & Payne Funeral Home Legacy. Above all, we continue providing and delivering the finest funeral services in the Athens community.
